Watch out Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan fans; the two actors are putting their Bollywood projects aside next year - temporarily of course - to star in two different Hollywood films Maximum City by Aamir and Xtrme City (Extreme City) by SRK. And curiously enough, the movies have similar titles and are both being filmed in Mumbai. Aamir Khan has accepted to star in Danny Boyle's upcoming movie Maximum City, while SRK has been offered a part in Paul Schrader's flick Xtrme City (Extreme City).

Both of these movies Xtrme city (Extreme City), and Maximum City are being released in the year 2011.

2011 would be the year to immortalize, as Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan would be played off against each other at a bigger stage. While Aamir Khan would be seen in Danny Boyle's Maximum City, SRK will be acting in Paul Schrader's Xtrme City.
Interestingly, both of the two films are adjusted to go on the floors next year.

Aamir Khan's Maximum City


Aamir Khan's Maximum City is established on the novel by the same name. The book got spout reviews when it was brought out in 2004. The book combines elements of memoir, travel writing, as well as socio-political analysis of the people of Mumbai. The novel was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2005.

Shah Rukh Khan's Xtrme City (Extreme City)

Paul Schrader's Xtrme City has a similar theme as it is also set in Mumbai.Shah Rukh Khan's Xtrme City looks at the Lower side of Mumbai's slums and the people living in it. The film will be in English and Schrader fatigued some time living in Dharavi to get a feel of the place. Aside from Shah Rukh there will also be a Hollywood actor. The director is known for movies like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull and his new drama promises to be a cross-cultural film with dialogues in both Hindi and English. Xtrme City (Extreme City) tells the story of an American who travels to Mumbai to assist his father-in-law with a kidnapping case but tangles in a gangster plot. According to the buzz, none other than Hollywood hottie Leonardo Di Caprio will star face-to-face SRK in the movie.

The two stars met at this year's Berlin Film Festival and stuck to the project.
"Leonardo, Martin and I spent some time together. Martin was gracious enough to remember that he had met me in Cannes way back in 2002 when I was there for Devdas. He wants to watch Devdas and I've promised to send it to him. I'll do so right way,"
SRK told reporters, putting off questions about Xtrme city (Extreme City).

Nevertheless, Paul Schrader pioneered and said,
"I hadn't thought about working in India. However, now I see Bollywood as the next great frontier. Xtrme City (Extreme City) is a cross-cultural entertainment that merges the cinematic traditions of Bollywood and Hollywood. I am indeed excited to make a film which is accessible and meaningful to both Indian and American cultures."

The year 2011 could very well be the decisive year in the Shah Rukh Khan-Aamir Khan battle for one-upmanship. If all goes according to plan, next year both the super stars leave international with a film each by two of the most illustrious directors on the global map.



What gives the global war of the Khans a knife-edge is the dramatic similarity in location of the two projects. Both films are set in Mumbai, with the city playing as expectant a role in the story as each of the Khans.

Both films are naturalistic takes on present-day Mumbai, its splendor and fetor. Boyle and Schrader have already traveled to Mumbai a number of times and met the two stars who are a part of the respective films.

"At the end of the day, a film about life in Mumbai is a film about life in the city. Even if two different directors from two different continents (Boyle is British, Schrader is American) work on two different projects, the spirit of the city is bound to be a common thread. “,
Says a common friend of the two stars.


Boyle has an edge, though. He has been already there, done it before in Mumbai with Oscar achiever Slumdog Millionaire. He knows what facet of the city he will highlight in Maximum City.

Sound engineer Resul Pookutty, who once again teams up with Danny Boyle after Slumdog, says:
No two films about Mumbai can ever be the same, even if shot by the same director. "Mumbai is a versatile and varied city. Maximum City will be very different from Slumdog and from Xtrme city (Extreme City). "
